Public companies like plan their stock issues very carefully. When they issue new shares it’s usually because they want money for new growth… like Oriflame Holdings AG of Sweden just did. Last month (August 2015) Oriflame issued new shares as part of their movement from one corporate domicile (place of registration) to another. In this case...from Luxembourg to Switzerland.

Oriflame has had a lot to be proud of lately with their success in the Indian market but things in Russia aren’t going so good right now. Regular OBTAINER readers will remember that last year Oriflame had a run-in with Russian tax authorities and, although they professed their innocence of any wrong-doing, they did not win their appeal to the Russian tax authorities. It is believed that they (Oriflame) might still be appealing those charges.

It’s not the first time this has happened. A company backs out of a country and there’s a mad scramble to pick up the orphan distributors who already know the MLM business model and many of whom have some degree of downline all really to follow them into whatever new opportunity they recommend. That’s what’s happening with Nature’s Sunshine Products (NSP) in Vietnam. NSP has announced that it wants to streamline its operations and refocus its activities on what it considers more profitable growth opportunities in other areas.

In a recent press release from it’s Mumbai (formerly Bombay) India headquarters, Swedish direct sales player Oriflame says it has set "the highest growth projection" for India and that its focus in the country will be on wellness even though India’s direct selling sector is having a tough time following a string of high profile arrests of leaders with other MLM companies operating in India over the past few years. Oriflame's global vice-president for product marketing Mimmi Frolen told one interviewer recently, "India is among the highest growth markets for us.” She further said that India is among its top ten markets in terms of sales.

Global cosmetics giant Oriflame has had some inconveniences in Russia but it’s not kept them from inaugurating their new production facility in Noginsk which will further streamline their business in the region. The Swedish beauty and hygiene products MLM giant has an ongoing dispute with Russian tax authorities and has also suffered from current Russian currency problems but nevertheless is taking a long term approach toward what they see as the tremendous potential of the Russian market. The announcement regarding their new manufacturing is their latest move.

In spite of the fact that Oriflame is still fighting its adverse tax judgement in Russia, the company is moving ahead with the rest of its Russian business and the they just opened their new product plant in Noginsk. The factory involved a considerable investment for Oriflame, €150M, but will enable the company to be significantly more competitive in the growing Russian market as well as increase their long-term ROI in the country.

Whereas some companies have had legal problems and distribution challenges in India, Oriflame, founded in 1967 in Sweden by the brothers Jonas af Jochnick and Robert af Jochnick and today an MLM company of global scope, is doing fine in India. In fact, although the European economy is sluggish, one Oriflame executive says that India might soon be the company’s biggest market.
